The Indian subcontinent is the largest place for Greater Flamingo and Lesser Flamingo, coming to India in every winter season to give us a chance to get lucky to see them.
The best places and sanctuaries to determine Flamingos in India are in Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, Bhigwan – Maharashtra, Little Rann of Kutch- Gujrat, Sewri Mudflats – Mumbai, Maharashtra, Gogte Saltpan near Vasai, and many more places as below.

Bhigwan – Maharashtra

Bhigwan may be a village and sometimes called as Bharatpur of Maharashtra, situated on the border of Pune and Solapur district, 100 km far away from Pune. Bhigwan town has a Ujjain dam and famous for flamingo bird watching places and wildlife photography in the Maharashtra region. Every year many photographer enthusiasts visit Bhigwan every year, because of this Bhigwan become the most important place for Flamingo Bird – Best Places to see in India | Flamingo Migration Route in India.

Sewri Mudflats – Mumbai, Maharashtra

Sewri Mudflats is one among the first seven islands of Bombay, located at the sting of South Mumbai. Thousands of Greater and Lesser Flamingos visit the Sewri Mudflats annually from the months of October to March and migratory birds watching is one among the simplest things to do in Mumbai.

Kutch- Gujrat

Kutch is called the Flamingo city of India where you can see migratory flamingo birds, located within the flats of the Rann of Kutch. Little Rann of Kutch or Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary has the most important and hottest breeding grounds for the Lesser Flamingos in India.

Pulicat Bird Sanctuary – Andhra Pradesh

Pulicat aviary is that the second largest brackish water in India, located in Nellore of Andhra Pradesh. Pulicat Lake aviary and Nelapattu aviary are two hottest bird sanctuaries in South India and a crucial breeding site for spot-billed pelicans in India and noted for the many greater flamingos.

Chilka Lake – Odisha

Odisha’s Chilka Lake is Asia’s saltwater largest inland land an important habitat for flamingos in India. Chilka Lake is India’s migratory birds paradise place where you can found a large flock of flamingos, and other bird varieties like Sanderling, Black Kite, Sea eagle, and Falcon.

Thol Lake – Gujarat

Thol Lake is a man-made lake surrounded by marshes and declared because of the Thol aviary. Thol Lake sanctuary attracts thousands of migratory flamingoes and Sarus crane birds and one of the most popular birding places near Ahmedabad.

Jawai Dam – Rajasthan

Jawai Dam is that the biggest dam within the western Rajasthan and therefore the reservoir is a paradise for migratory birds including flamingos during the winter season. Jawai village and hills also are famous for a huge population of Indian leopards and called as India’s Leopard Hills.

Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary – Gujarat

Khijadiya aviary has a unique ecosystem of both water lakes and salt marshlands, located in the Jamnagar district of Gujarat. The aviary host about 300 sorts of migratory birds just like the policeman bird, black-tailed godwit, Eurasian wigeon, and Demoiselle crane.

Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary – Gujarat

Nal Sarovar aviary is one of the most important waterbird destinations in India and the largest wetland aviary in Gujarat. The lake mostly inhabited by migratory birds and some point attracts moreover 210 species of birds in winter and spring including rosy pelicans, flamingoes and migratory waterfowl and many more.

Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary – Rajasthan

Bharatpur aviary now called Keoladeo Park is home to over 366 species of birds and also a world heritage site. The Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary has man managed wetland and it’s known for nesting of migratory birds including flamingo, painted storks and water birds and many more species.

My Flamingo photography starts in Gogte Salt pans near Vasai, Maharastra, It was early morning me and my friends searching for flamingos in nearby areas and we came to know near Gogte Salt Pans, lesser flamingos have been seen. So, We made plans to leave early and reach there, it was a beautiful morning indeed.

This was an amazing feeling when I have captured in my camera, I used Nikon P900 the 83x mega zoom point & shoot. This photo walk turned out to be the happiest moment in my photography journey. When you struggle to get through all difficulties and ended with the taste of success, we all forget the barriers, just enjoyed the beauty.

Tips to capture Flamingos

Starts early
Comfortable clothes and shoes
Raincoat and umbrella in case rains
Extra Battery
Extra Memory card
Tripod Must get a sharper image
Carry some snacks and drinking water.
Be patient
Be positive
Focus
Have fun

You should starts early in the morning to get more chances to see them before you should check the high tide and low tide timings. Flamingos normally came near shore after 1 to 1.5 hrs of low tide.

Always wear comfortable clothes and shoes during your photo walk, it will make you feel comfortable.

Kindly be prepared for the rains, carry a raincoat, umbrella for saving yourself and your gear too.

Never forget to carry an extra battery, extra memory card so, you will never miss any opportunity.

Tripod is the best things when you know you will not move too much to capture images, more importantly, a tripod will help to get sharper images without bothering for any camera shake.

Any photo walk can take a longer time, so better to carry some snacks and water to fill your stomach.

Above all, you have to be patient, positive and focus throughout the process.
